Planning Your First Medicare Year in Dover

A 65th birthday brings cake, family and, for most people, a decision about Medicare. The choices you make in the first few months can affect what you pay for years, so a little planning goes a long way.

This page lays out the key dates, the questions to answer before you enroll and the mistakes we see most often. Every situation is different, especially if you are still working or have coverage through a spouse.

We are glad to go through your own timeline with you, and any family member who helps you with paperwork is welcome on the call.

The Initial Enrollment Period

Picture seven months with your birthday month in the middle: three before, three after. Enroll early in that stretch and benefits begin the very first of the month you turn 65.

Anyone receiving Social Security checks generally gets A and B with no application and your card arrives by mail. If not, you apply through Social Security online, by phone or at the local office.

Questions to Answer First

  • Will you keep working past 65, and how large is the employer?
  • Do you have coverage through a spouse's job or a retiree plan?
  • Which doctors and hospitals do you want to keep using?
  • What prescriptions do you take, and where do you fill them?
  • Do you spend long periods outside New Jersey?

Your answers point toward either Original Medicare with a supplement and drug plan, or a Medicare Advantage plan.

Penalties to Avoid

Putting off Part B without qualifying coverage raises the premium by a tenth for each complete year you went without it, and the higher price usually lasts for life. Part D has its own penalty if you go too long without creditable drug coverage.

If you have job-based coverage from a large employer, you can usually delay without penalty and use a Special Enrollment Period later. Keep proof of that coverage.

Coming Off Employer or Marketplace Coverage

After employment-based coverage stops, an eight-month penalty-free Part B window begins. COBRA is not active-work coverage, so letting it run first is a costly mistake.

If you buy insurance through Get Covered New Jersey, plan to switch to Medicare when you become eligible, since marketplace subsidies usually stop once you qualify.

Turning 65 Questions From Dover

Is Medicare possible before I claim Social Security?

Yes. You can enroll in Medicare at 65 even if you plan to delay Social Security retirement benefits.

When should I choose a supplement or Advantage plan?

Ideally a few months before your Part B start date, so coverage begins on time. Medigap has a six-month guaranteed window starting when Part B begins.

Does my spouse get Medicare at the same time?

No. Each person qualifies based on their own age. A younger spouse may need to keep other coverage until turning 65.
