Covering Teeth, Eyes and Ears in Dover
Cleanings, new glasses and hearing aids are some of the most common needs as we age, yet Original Medicare covers very little of this routine care. Many people are surprised by that when they first enroll.
There are several ways to fill the gap, from Medicare Advantage plans with built-in benefits to separate dental policies and discount programs. Each has trade-offs in cost, choice of provider and how much is actually covered.
We help you sort through them so the coverage matches how often you see a dentist, eye doctor or audiologist.

We do not offer every plan available in your area. Any information we provide is limited to those plans we do offer in your area. Please contact Medicare.gov or 1-800-MEDICARE to get information on all of your options.
What Original Medicare Covers and Does Not
Under Parts A and B alone, cleanings, fillings, dentures, refraction exams for lenses, hearing aids and their fittings are generally your own expense.
It does cover some related care when it is medically necessary, such as cataract surgery, glaucoma screenings for people at high risk, and certain dental services needed as part of a covered hospital procedure.
Coverage Through Medicare Advantage
Many Medicare Advantage plans include dental, vision and hearing benefits. The details vary a lot: some cover only preventive dental care, others include fillings or dentures with annual limits.

Separate Policies and Discount Plans
If you prefer Original Medicare with a Medigap plan, you can buy a stand-alone dental or vision policy. These usually have a monthly premium, an annual maximum and sometimes a waiting period.
Discount plans are not insurance; they offer reduced prices at participating offices. They can be useful for some people, but it is important to know the difference.
Hearing Aids Today
Since 2022, stores sell OTC hearing aids without any prescription for adults with mild to moderate hearing loss. For more significant loss, a hearing professional can fit prescription devices.
Dual eligibles should also look at D-SNP extras, which are often richer.
