Getting Prescription Coverage Right in Dover
For many households, prescriptions are the most predictable medical expense of the year and also the easiest one to overpay. Part D is the piece of Medicare that covers outpatient medicines, and private insurers run every Part D plan under federal rules.
Each plan keeps its own drug list (the formulary), sorts those drugs into price tiers and names its preferred pharmacies. Two plans with similar premiums can produce very different yearly costs for the same person.
We enter your exact medicines, doses and pharmacy into each plan we offer and show you the estimated total for the whole year, in English or Spanish.

We do not offer every plan available in your area. Any information we provide is limited to those plans we do offer in your area. Please contact Medicare.gov or 1-800-MEDICARE to get information on all of your options.
2026 Drug Cost Protections
This year, the most you will pay out of pocket for covered Part D drugs is $2,100. Once your spending reaches that amount, you pay nothing more for covered medicines for the rest of the calendar year.
Covered insulin is limited to $35 for a one-month supply, and recommended adult vaccines covered under Part D, such as the shingles shot, come at no cost to you.
If large costs early in the year are a problem, the Medicare Prescription Payment Plan turns pharmacy-counter charges into smaller monthly bills instead of paying everything at the pharmacy counter.
Formularies, Tiers and Pharmacies
A plan's formulary decides which medicines it covers. Lower tiers usually hold generics and cost the least; higher tiers hold brand-name and specialty drugs. Some drugs need prior authorization or require you to try a cheaper option first.
Pharmacies matter too. Many plans offer lower copays at preferred pharmacies, so we check whether the store you already use in Dover, or a mail-order option, gets the better price.
- Confirm each medicine is on the formulary
- Note the tier and any prior authorization or step therapy rule
- Compare preferred and standard pharmacy pricing
- Add premium, deductible and copays into one yearly estimate
Avoiding the Late Enrollment Penalty
Going more than 62 straight days without Part D or equivalent creditable coverage, once you are first eligible, can attach a permanent surcharge to every future drug plan premium.
Retiree plans and employer coverage may count as creditable; your plan should send you a notice each year that says so. Keep those notices. Our enrollment guide explains how to time your first sign-up.
Ways to Lower What You Pay
New Jersey residents may qualify for PAAD or Senior Gold, two state programs that reduce prescription costs, and federal Extra Help trims premiums and copays when income and savings are modest.
Our help paying for Medicare page explains who qualifies and how the programs work together. People with both Medicare and NJ FamilyCare should also look at D-SNP options.

Can I switch drug plans if my medicines change?
Usually, yes, though normally only in the autumn period that closes December 7. Certain situations, like moving or qualifying for Extra Help, can open other chances to switch.
Does a Medicare Advantage plan include Part D?
Most do. If you pick an Advantage plan with drug coverage, you would not buy a separate Part D plan. See our Medicare Advantage page.
My medicine is missing from the drug list. Now what?
Request a formulary exception, ask your prescriber about a listed substitute, or move plans when a window opens. We screen for this problem up front.
