How Medigap Fits Into a Dover Retirement

Plenty of people in Dover like the freedom of Original Medicare, which is honored nationwide by every provider taking Medicare patients. What they dislike is the open-ended share of each bill that Parts A and B pass back to the patient. A Medicare Supplement policy, also called Medigap, exists to absorb that share.

You buy the policy from a private insurance company and pay it a monthly premium. In exchange, the insurer pays some or nearly all of the deductibles and coinsurance Medicare leaves unpaid, according to the plan letter you choose.

Our job is to help you decide whether a steady premium is a better deal for you than a lower-premium option with more cost sharing, and if it is, which letter and which carrier make the most sense.

The Costs Original Medicare Hands Back

Suppose you are admitted to Saint Clare's in Denville for a few days. Under the 2026 rules, Part A by itself expects $1,736 from you at the start of that benefit period. After you leave, the follow-up visits, scans and physical therapy fall under Part B, which typically leaves you with 20 percent of each approved charge once the $283 yearly deductible is met.

Original Medicare puts no annual ceiling on that 20 percent. A difficult year with surgery and months of rehab can produce a large balance. Supplements were designed to take that unpredictability off the table.

  • Part A deductible and the daily coinsurance for long hospital stays
  • Your 20 percent Part B coinsurance
  • Skilled nursing facility coinsurance on many plan letters
  • Emergency care abroad on some letters, handy for long trips to see family in Colombia, Mexico or Honduras

Same Letter, Same Benefits

Federal and state rules fix each Medigap letter's benefits. Buy Plan G from any insurer and you get the identical coverage sold under that letter elsewhere in New Jersey. Carriers differ only on price, the history of rate increases and the customer service.

Plan G is popular with new enrollees because, aside from the Part B deductible, it covers almost every gap. Plan N tends to cost less monthly while asking you for small copays at certain doctor and emergency room visits. Plan F and Plan C are closed to people whose Medicare eligibility started in 2020 or later.

Since the coverage itself is fixed, we focus the comparison on price, rate trends and carrier reputation for the companies we represent.

Your Six-Month Guaranteed Window

Timing matters more with Medigap than with almost any other Medicare decision. A one-time six-month guaranteed period opens once you are both 65 and covered by Part B. While it lasts, carriers must accept you at standard rates regardless of past illnesses.

Once it ends, insurers in many cases may review your health and can decline the application. That matters if you ever leave a supplement for a Part C plan and want to return. We go over these rules before you make any change, and our turning 65 guide maps the full timeline.

Adding Prescription Coverage

Newly sold supplements leave out prescriptions, so the usual move is to pair one with a separate Part D plan. Signing up for Part D on time avoids a late enrollment penalty that can last as long as you have Medicare.

When we run the numbers, we combine the supplement premium, the drug plan premium and your estimated pharmacy spending into one annual figure. We then place it next to the likely cost of a Medicare Advantage plan so you are comparing complete pictures, not just monthly prices.

Who Usually Leans This Way

People who choose a supplement often travel for long periods, want to keep a specialist in New York City or at a teaching hospital without checking networks, or simply want to know a hospital stay will not bring a large bill.

Others decide the premium is more than they want to pay each month. Neither choice is wrong. We look at your health, your doctors and your budget before pointing you in a direction.

Medigap Questions From Dover

Can I use a Medigap plan outside New Jersey?

Yes. A supplement follows Original Medicare, so it travels to every state with you, accepted wherever Medicare is.

Will my Medigap premium rise?

It may. Insurers price policies in different ways and can increase rates over time, so we review each company's track record with you.

I still work and have coverage through my employer. Do I need Medigap now?

Often you can wait. Large-employer coverage often lets you postpone Part B, which also delays your six-month Medigap window. We can check how your plan works with Medicare.
